THE MAVERICK MODEL

I RECENTLY RAIDED MY STACK OF OLD RUSSH MAGAZINES IN SEEK OF THE INTERVIEW I REMEMBERED WITH MISS ELDRIDGE, FOR ME IT WAS MEMORABLE, I HADN'T ACTUALLY COME ACROSS HER BEFORE BUT SHE REMINDED ME A LITTLE OF MYSELF IN SOME WAYS AND LEFT ME FEELING RE-INSPIRED ON A SOMEWHAT GLUM DAY SO I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE. I LIKED HER ANSWERES IN THE INTERVIEW THAT FOLLOWS THE INTRODUCTION BY NATALIE SHUKUR BELOW, I HOPE YOU ENJOY.

SUSAN ELDRIDGE was the face (and body) of a generation. The mercurial model personified the listless new millenium in fashion, the hangover of the 90's and the love bites, pint-and-shoot snaps and hypersexuality that came with it. She's the kind of girl whose editorial you would rip out and put on your wall. Eldridge has always had a chameleon-like quality. She has that nubile, Lolita thing going on. She can play the doe-eyed virgin and the bad girl, the wholesome athletic type and the high fashion plate. with her then-boyfriend Terry Richardson, she was part of some of the defining fashion photographs of the past decade. the pair re-imagined the raw veracity of Nan Goldin and Larry Clark before them, with a teenage Eldridge appearing sometimes bruised, unkempt, a little unhinged, legs akimbo, sulking, ciagrette dangling, in the throes of passion, a cheeky glint in her eye - laid bare, both literally and figuratively.
She was the poster child of TERRYWORLD, the face of Sisley and marc jacobs, the girl licking the big wooden bat on Whirlwind heat's album sleeve and the blonde wigged-wigged babe covorting with pharrell on the cover of The face. But she never appeared as simply an appendage to the picure, neither the photographers prey. She gave as good as she got, and every frame oozed with her personality. She WAS the picture.
Eldridge and Richardson caused contoversey wherever they went - not least because the brunette with the devilish smile, although in her 20s at the time, appeared to be in her tweens. Six years and two children laster, she could still almost pass for a 12-year-old. It must have been fun screwing with people like that - it looked like a lot of fun anyhow.
After a three-year hiatus she took to nurture her sns, Eldridge is back with a bang looking as delectable and dynamic as ever. She never fails to bring it. RUSSH caught up with the straight shooting, high flying model in-between shows during new York Fashion Week to talk about life and L-O-V-E love.

RUSSH: Hi Susan, what are you up to these days?
SUSAN ELDRIDGE: A little bit of everything, i'm the woman who does it all.
We haven't seen you for a while, you took a few years off from modelling...
I put all my energy into having children, because i was afraid that if i did not take time to focus on it, that it may never happen, an i knew i would not be happy if i did not do it. I have two wonderful sons who love each other very much, i just became pregnant in New York during the shows, so let's keep our fingers crossed!
When did you start modelling and how were you discovered?
ten years ago, i went to a modelling convention!
You are one of our all-time favorites! You truly brought something unique to the fashion world...
I just enjoy it, and try to keep it real.
Your work with Terry Richardson is iconic. You guys caused quite the stir...was it lots of fun working together?
I wasn't really playing the lolita, i think, he was my man, and he was always snapping pictures, you know?
What did you learn from Terry?
A few things about light and communicating with references in a media sense.
Are there other fashion world figures who have been influencial in your life?
I think fashion as a whole has a hugely influenced my life for the better.
Please spill the beans on your beauty secrets...
Eat well, love life, laughter and love, good friends, good food, did i say love? And well, love!
Outside of your work, does fashion interest you?
Yes! Fashion is a beautiful machine in a sense. I like to wear things that make me feel good, vibrant, alive.
What else interests you?
In a nutshell? Tomorrow's generation.
Any hidden talents?
I can do anything.
What's you motto in life?
Live. Love.
Who or what is your greatest love?
Life.
OK, the cultural bit... Favourite movie?
Fight Club.
Favourite works of literature?
I love and appreciate all literature. From a very young age, i started to drink books, and now have a beautiful fountain of knowledge that i constantly seek to fortify.
What's currently playing on your ipod?
I don't have an ipod! I sold it during the Great American Recession to buy diapers!
What has becoming a mother taught you?
I used to believe that people were a product of their environment, now i have realised that people are affected by their environment, however, we are born who we are.
What's next?
Well, i am doing my best every day to prepare the way for a better tomorrow... while still enjoying today, of course!
